Mission Statement
The Carlton-Carew EP Foundation is a non-profit corporation named in honor of Thomas Daniel and Rebecca Deborah Carlton-Carew, and Sekoyeo Hector and Queen Elizabeth Carlton-Carew, descendants of ex- slaves that settled in the former Colony of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Our mission is to advance the socio-economic development of the people of the African Diaspora, sub-Saharan Africa, with special interest in Sierra Leone; “to celebrate and promote the history, heritage, language and culture of descendants of enslaved Africans who were settled in Sierra Leone and other parts of the world.”
Here are five broad-based strategies that are used to implement our Mission. These strategies are: (1) Research, (2) Coordination and Collaboration, (3) Information Dissemination and Awareness Raising, (4) Education (5) Cultural Events. These are used to highlight the Foundation’s goals.
Goal 1. Research
1.1 Actively contribute to the preservation of historical sources, including oral histories, artifacts and historical sites, which depict the rich and complex story of Sierra Leone and those of the African Diaspora.
1.2 Contribute to the restoration and preservation of historical sites, including Banana Island Slave Fort and other locations, underlining the importance of these areas as significant sites of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
1.3 To create, in cooperation with universities, study abroad –programs for college and university students to learn and research the history, culture, languages, geography, nature, and economy of the African Continent.
Goal 2. Coordination and Collaboration
2.1 Advance the socio-economic development of the people of Sierra Leone by maintaining an active link with Freetown through the provision of community services and support, including the development of seniors’ recreation centers, libraries, and museums.
2.2 Nurture the historical links between the descendants of Africa in the Diaspora and Sierra Leone, with emphasis on the Gullah/Geechee people of the Sea Islands of North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida; the Black Seminoles of Oklahoma and Texas; the Maroons of Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands; the Afro Brazilians of Bahia, the Nova Scotians of Canada; and the Americo-Liberians of Monrovia, Liberia.
2.3 Dialogue, promote, develop, network and/or collaborate with heritage groups in the U.S. and abroad to promote unity and understanding.
2.4 Dialogue, promote, develop, network and/or collaborate with peoples of African descent and other people of good will in the U.S. and throughout the world to highlight and build respect for the contributions that African people have made to world civilization in general and the United States in particular.
Goal 3. Awareness Raising and Information Dissemination
3.1 Disseminate information to improve understanding and increase people’s awareness of moral, social, and economic issues relating to Africans in the Diaspora and Africans in the continent; to encourage discussions through the:

Goal 4. Education
4.1 Educate, and encourage, entrepreneurs and investors to seize business opportunities in international trade partnerships; to engage and empower our youths in business education throughout the Diaspora
4.2 Share knowledge about; classical African civilization, history of enslaved Africans and their descendants, their resettlements, language, culture, and heritage.
